About This Project

The Client requested a design and build to signpost the children’s hospital and provide an uplifting outdoor space away from the clinical setting for the children and their families.

The concept is journey; The design is an analogy of personal daily journeys and Noah’s epic journey. The visitor is seamlessly guided by a path visiting art installations within themed areas around the garden. The deck cuts through the ocean, providing a safe place for play and a cwtch for contemplation.

Inspiration for the garden was taken from the wards in the Children’s Hospital Phase One; Land, Ocean, Space and Sky. Interpretations of these have been incorporated into the garden, through planting and art installations, creating themed areas.

Working with the concept journey, the mural is an abstraction of life’s journey and is titled Space.  It looks at nature’s inner and outer worlds, exploring them at a micro and macro level.  Working to the designer’s brief, 9 G.C.S.E. Howell’s School Llandaff Students worked with a local ceramacist to design and fabricate the stunning mural.  In addition members of Howell’s School Llandaff Junior School and Nursery School helped with selecting Noah’s animals and creating designs for the path.

Officially opened Thursday 31st May 2012.
